Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews looks to be working hard to get into mid-season form, as new footage shows how rigorous his workout routine has become.

With the 2025-26 season still a ways away, it won't be long before we take a look at the calendar to see the preseason creeping up, with the regular slate of games right around the corner from that.
We have an idea of when both the NHL and Maple Leafs kick off their seasons, and there's going to be a lot of attention on Toronto and how they'll respond without Mitch Marner in the fold.
They've added some solid pieces and are trying to change the way they are perceived on the ice, and though they have some more moves to make; it's a slow, steady, but so far successful process.

Matthews' workout routine shows the captain is ready to lead

One player who is going to have all eyes on him is Auston Matthews. The Maple Leafs captain suffered a setback this season, and after a breathtaking 69-goal season in 2023-24, he didn't even manage to hit half of that.
Dealing with an injury since the season began, Matthews was a shell of the player we know he can be, and if he's still struggling next season; Toronto could be in big trouble.
So it's a relief to see that not only does Matthews look healthy, but he's putting in the hard work and push himself to the limit in his summer workout.
The video shows Matthews stick handling through some tires as well as taking passes in the slot for seamless one-time wrist shots and finishing with some one-on-one action.

Auston Matthews clearly motivated to put 2024-25 season behind him

It's nothing too crazy, and it's not like we're watching Dude Perfect; but to see Matthews being so quick on the ice, and his shot release looking as quick as ever is a huge relief.
A knock on him last season was his hesitation when it came to shooting, as he would often take an extra second or two to shoot which caused goalies to find their positioning and stop him.
His first year of captaincy could be seen as disappointing but with his injuries and the bad luck the Maple Leafs had; it's hardly his fault.
Matthews, 27, managed to still put up 78 points in 67 games (33 goals, 45 assists) and was solid in the playoffs (11 points in 13 games) but still wasn't that Game 7 impact player the team needed.
If this workout session is any indication, Matthews knows how important this season is and all the implications that come with it.
The captain is ready to give orders, it's just up to the others to follow suit.
