The Toronto Maple Leafs could have a potential acquisition option in Alexandre Texier, who may be headed towards an exit in St. Louis.
Recent reports indicated that St. Louis Blues forward Alexandre Texier could be heading towards a departure, and raises the question if the Leafs should take interest.
Alexandre Texier was placed on waivers by the Blues, with Elliotte Friedman reporting that there is the potential of a future contract termination.
Texier, a 26-year-old winger from France, has appeared in just eight games this season for the Blues with just a single point, and it appears that may be the end for Texier in St. Louis.
First reported by The Athletic's Blues reporter Jeremy Rutherford, Texier was expected to be placed on waivers today for the purpose of being assigned to the American Hockey League.
Elliotte Friedman reported earlier today on '
32 Thoughts' that Texier may look to have his contract terminated, setting the 26-year-old up to move to another team if that happens, but for now will stick in the Blues system.
Friedman linked the Montreal Canadiens as a team that could make sense for Texier, noting similarities to
David Kampf recently having his deal terminated by Toronto and signing with the Vancouver Canucks, Montreal having been viewed as a potential fit.
Who Alexandre Texier actually is and what kind of game he plays
Alexandre Texier is a winger who has been primarily a goalscorer in the NHL, with 40 goals and 91 points in 251 games with Columbus and St. Louis.
While playing for Columbus, Texier left the team for personal reasons, spending a year playing in Switzerland before being traded to St. Louis in 2024.
Texier has shown he can play at best as a bottom-six offensive winger, but has struggled to produce this season for a Blues team that has faced difficulties at both ends of the ice.
A change of scenery could be a boost to Texier who has shown the ability to produce offense in a depth role, and could have NHL suitors.
how Alexandre Texier could quietly give the Leafs flexibility to make a trade
Alexandre Texier could hold onto a bottom-six spot for the Leafs and help to pursue a trade in dealing a forward for a puck-moving defenceman to help the team's
defensive struggles.
Texier could fill a roster spot that would allow for the Leafs depth to move a costlier forward contract if it helps adding on the blueline in a trade.
The issue for Toronto is a lack of production for Texier, and with a cap hit of $2.1M, if any team does in fact want him, including the Leafs, it may be likely Texier only moves if his contract is terminated and that contract off the books.
But if he is able to get back to his old self, the Toronto Maple Leafs could get a low-risk forward option in Texier, and someone who provides some depth impact to the roster.
