Mitch Marner Speaks in New Footage About His Darkest Leafs Moment: 'Full-Time Security at My House'
Mitch Marner gets candid in a new interview about how serious hate against him spiraled, including threats to his life.
Speaking openly for the first time about the end to his time in Toronto, Mitch Marner discussed his exit with TSN's Mark Masters, and got in-depth about how severe the negativity got towards him that it led to him and those around him fearing for his own safety.
Marner told Masters that he had to deal with not just targeted harassment online, but that it got so bad that he had to get security to his house over threats made to him, including having his home being doxxed online.
The mental toll of Marner being highly aware of what was said about him online was challenging, although he said he still holds Leafs fans in high regards, regretful he couldn't win for his hometown.
The market's very passionate. They love the team. I know it. I was born and raised there. I've been a part of the Leafs Nation for a long time.
But when your family's safety comes into question, especially having a new son, I don't think it's acceptable having full-time security pretty much at your house for two weeks after the playoffs just to make sure no one's coming to the house. And for safety, trying to walk your dog and your child.
So it was a little unfortunate, but yeah, we all deal with this stuff.
While Marner is not pressing collective guilt on Leafs fans for comments made by a few, he admits the hatred from fans was difficult to handle.
The problem is that the love comments don't come out as much as the hatred ones, and that's just the way life goes, that's the way social media has turned into in a way.
Marner Still Respects Leafs Fans Despite Messy Breakup
Although the divorce between Marner and the Toronto Maple Leafs was a very public spat with heated emotions, there is still a lot of love from Mitch to Toronto and the fans.
Having grown up a fan of the Leafs, Marner still evidently respects his old team and hopes for the best, although his focus will be on Vegas and what they do next season, he's not holding any grudge as some fans may.
Understandably, Marner still holds some discomfort at how things ended and how some diehard fans reacted, but in the end still has respect for the fan base that once embraced him.
Mitch Marner's Return With Vegas Likely To Be Heated
When Mitch Marner returns to play his first game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on January 23, 2026, it will come with heated emotions both inside and outside the arena.
The media will almost surely be unable to contain the storyline about Marner's return, along with whatever storylines
are going to be run with. For the fans, it's almost certain that Marner will be booed and deal with a lot of negativity.
From social media, there will surely be a big amount of attacks towards Marner, which he'd be best to avoid. If Marner were to struggle, it would instantly be something for fans to feast upon. When Marner returns to Toronto, the boos will be drowning.
It will be an impassioned return for Marner and a highly negative one. Time may heal wounds from Leafs fans, but right away, the animosity will almost surely continue and won't lessen so soon.
