There's a new caveat in the Mitch Marner saga as the star forward might be looking into a very different contract this summer and it might only be a couple years before he hits free agency again.
There's really no way to know until he puts pen to paper, but when he does, could he end up surprising everyone?
Mitch Marner may entertain two-year deal: Pierre LeBrun
According to The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun, that's exactly what he might do. In his latest article he wrote about the rumors he heard regarding the potential of Mitch Marner signing a deal for only a couple seasons, then running it back to maximize his financial potential:
Mitch Marner is considering a potential two-year deal worth around $12-13 million per season, setting himself up to hit the market again when the cap jumps to $113 million or more.
The risk is injury, but at 28, he'd be 30 when hitting UFA status again. The Golden Knights, Kings, and Stars are believed to be high on his list-though Dallas is a long shot given their financial commitment to

It's quite the stunning turnaround and sees the contract level hit basically every tier during speculation. First it was a seven or eight year deal to make him the richest man in hockey, then it turned into a potential four-year pact so he can hit free agency with hopefully some playoff merit under his belt.
Now with this potential two-year contract being thrown around, it looks more and more like Marner is trying to get as much money as possible in the shortest amount of time.
Mitch Marner saga becoming tiring; tarnishing reputation more and more
Look, for all the good Marner has done in Toronto he's quickly ruining whatever positive he had in the city. From declining trades, to
cancelling charity events, to the constant flip-flopping; it's getting a bit tiresome.
It's becoming clearer and clearer that Marner wants to just earn a lot of money, and while it's warranted; especially after his 102-point season, his inability to perform when it matters is still a huge black spot in his career.
Vegas, Los Angeles, and Dallas are all potential players who could feasibly afford a two-year deal, and he'll certainly make a lot of money there, but if he fails to show up yet again; does he still end up getting a better deal later?
If he ends up coming into a place, doing what he does in the regular season but fail in the playoffs again, not only does that give the team he signed for pause; but every other contending team who has to determine if they want to pay for a regular season superstar or a winning player.
