What's old is new again for Mitch Marner, with the newest member of the Vegas Golden Knights choosing to wear a different jersey number as he starts his new journey.
After the dust settled on Monday, we saw Mitch Marner traded to the Vegas Golden Knights and immediately sign an eight-year, $96-million extension; not only earning himself a huge payday, but
saving some face with the Leafs faithful by finally playing ball and giving the team some help on the way out.
There's a lot of buzz around what Marner's going to do in Vegas, and it won't be long until we see him for the first time in a Vegas jersey.
Mitch Marner goes old school for new team
But what number will he be sporting? He's synonymous with #16, having worn that for his entire Leafs career; though
Pavel Dorofeyev holds that already.
So instead of trying to buy that number off Dorofeyev as they do in other professional sports, Marner has decided to reach into the time capsule and pull out old reliable: #93.
The journey starts now for Mitch Marner
Marner really couldn't find himself wearing that in Toronto, given that the legendary Doug Gilmour holds claim to that, and the pressure fans would have given him wearing that is even more than he already had.
But going back to his old London Knights number, it shows that not only does he still hold a deep connection to the number, but he's able to finally forge his own path.
It marks a moment in Marner's life where he is focused on a new beginning, and being able to pick his preferred number after all these seasons must feel like a bit of a weight off his shoulders. He can finally be himself in some regards.
You can also expect the new Marner jerseys to be flying off the shelves in Sin City, and the excitement he brings every night will endear himself quickly to Vegas fans, and he gets to play in a market that's much less scrutinized than Toronto; he's going to flourish.
It's time for Mitch Marner to break out on his own and forge his own path, and that all starts in Las Vegas with the #93.
