The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed John Tavares to a multi-year contract extension on Friday.
John Tavares has signed a four-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs for $4.38M annually, according to NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman on X.
The deal will see the former captain earn $17.52-million on this deal, and will give him a total of $138-million earned throughout his career with Toronto and New York.
Tavares, 34, had 36 goals, 38 assists, & 74 points in 75 games played this season for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The move keeps Tavares locked up in Toronto until 2029 and will have the veteran locked up with the Leafs until the end of his career, presumably.
Tavares was drafted first overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Islanders, having been the first CHL player to ever gain exceptional status to enter the Ontario Hockey League a year early.
Tavares spent nine in New York with the Islanders before signing a seven-year deal with his hometown Toronto Maple Leafs at $11M annually, a deal set to expire at the end of this season.
The move will now have the Leafs focusing on the signing of RFA
Matthew Knies, and on the team's free agency decision, including where to spend their money and considering the slim chance of a potential reunion with
Mitch Marner.
With the Toronto Maple Leafs, John Tavares has 222 career goals, 271 assists, & 493 points in 515 career games played, as well as 17 goals and 31 points in 51 playoff games.
Coming to Toronto seven years ago has been better than I ever anticipated. The challenge of helping bring the Cup back to many generations of Leafs fans and Leafs Nation is an incredible opportunity that pushes myself and my teammates every day.
TO is an incredible place to play, and it's an honour to pull on the Maple Leaf and wear the blue and white.
I'm thrilled to announce that I'm committed to four more years! My family and I are excited to continue our journey here in Toronto. The best is yet to come!
Go Leafs Go!

This is seemingly the first domino to fall for the Maple Leafs this summer, and with him locked up to a very reasonable deal,
the next stop is Matthew Knies.
Once he's taken care of? Expect Toronto to keep the pressure on and try to make some more key signings.
