Although the Maple Leafs don't have a ton of assets, they can use the ones they do have to acquire an interesting piece to add to their blue line.

With all the discussion about the Maple Leafs and their desire to make a trade, there are a few roadblocks to them getting to that destination. There's a lack of premium assets that won't be moved unless absolutely necessary, and the notoriously stringent tagging rules are causing a headache for John Chayka.

But he is open to making more deals, and knowing that staff and minds that are sitting in the Maple Leafs front office, they can make something work with what little they have.

Maple Leafs need to look out West for help on the blue line

They don't have the break the bank to make improvements though, and adding a lot more mobility and more offensive capability while getting younger is important. If they want to do so, they could just look West to Seattle.

The Kraken have already made one big deal with Shane Wright, trading him to the Nashville Predators, and they may be willing to sell on a defenseman they currently have no spot for - Ty Nelson.

Nelson, 22, was Seattle's 68th overall pick in the 2022 Draft, and the 5-foot-10, 198-pound defender is a perfect fit for what the Maple Leafs need. He's a savvy puck-mover who loves to play physical and uses his stout frame to crush opponents in open ice.

Elite Prospects spoke highly of his tenacity, and highlighted his willingness to put his body on the line while also having keen defensive awareness - he's not just a punishing hitter:

I like his four-way mobility to match attackers as they skate through the neutral-zone and his absolute desire to wall off access to his own end, even if, for that, he has to come to a stop at the blue-line and literally force the opposition to dump the puck in.

He puts his body on the line defensively and his motor is non-stop.

Talk about someone who shuts things down. Hearing that he is willing to do whatever it takes to stop a rush, be it a hit or simply standing firm on the blue line, it's like having Troy Stecher and Chris Tanev in one package.

Toronto's next two-way stud won't cost them an arm and a leg

He also just put up 11 goals and 34 points with the Coachella Firebirds of the AHL, and has proven that he can be a productive pro player, he just has no avenue in Seattle right now.

Toronto can offer a package that includes players that may offer them more intrigue such as Miroslav Holinka, or even Brendan Brisson; another Marlies standout.

At this point, the Maple Leafs need to get younger and more mobile on the blue line, with all credit to Nick Blankenburg and Marshall Rifai, but they aren't exactly the type of players Toronto needs right now, and they're hurt anyways.

Instead of trying to find a replacement with spare parts, the Maple Leafs should target Nelson. He's ready to make the leap, he's proven he can contribute, he's young and he's cheap.

John Chayka is all about making the big splashes this season, but perhaps a little drop in the ocean will have a ripple effect that changes 2026-27 for the better.
