The Toronto Maple Leafs were a big name throughout this year's NHL draft. Throughout the 7 rounds, they picked up 8 prospects total. Most notable of these was 31st overall pick and longtime fan of the team Ben Danford, who became a viral sensation after snubbing NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.
However, what was arguably the most pivotal moment for Toronto in the draft came during their time on the clock for the final pick of the draft at 225, the Maple Leafs brokered a deal with the Dallas Stars to acquire rights to Chris Tanev for Max Ellis and a 7th-round pick in 2026.
Despite seeming to be a relatively simple deal for the Stars, it turns out there is a loophole that can benefit Tornoto big time. The Maple Leafs have shared that because of Tanev's age, the team would not incur a cap penalty if he retires before the end of his contract. This gives them the flexibility to change the length and AAV without impacting the total pay.
Given these circumstances, the Toronto Maple Leafs could have a solid defensive player for possibly as many years as he has left in the NHL. With Chris Tanev's ability and a solid forward setup, Lord Stanley may have a chance to finally crawl back north.
