Craig Berube reveals Maple Leafs' Mitch Marner is returning next season
Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube had some interesting things to say about Mitch Marner today.
Marner of course, has been under a spotlight this summer. The 27-year-old has a single year left on hos contract, putting the Leafs in a tough situation with him. As a result, we have been flooded with conflicting rumors about his status all summer long. As far as head coach Craig Berube is concerned though, he appears to be saying. The Stanley Cup winner had this to say about Marner.
Craig Berube on Mitch Marner: "He's a character guy. He's a great person. Obviously, a great player. I'm looking forward to coaching him."
Of course, the reaction to this comment was as expected from Leafs fans. Many are taking this as a sign that he is definitely not being traded. After all, why would Berube make such comments if he actually wasn't going to get a chance to coach the player?
This comment is not made if he was being traded...
People were wrong saying he's being traded.
At the same time though, many fans would expect these kinds of comments, regardless of Marner's status with the team. What is he supposed to say about Mitch Marner when reporters ask about him? Ignore the question? Deflect?
What else is he supposed to say when asked about Mitch who's still a leaf?
«Yeah, he's a soft permitter player when it matters most. Have you guys seen his stat line in games 5-7? I hope he gets traded asap»
With all that being said, the prevailing belief at this point is that Marner will be on the Leafs roster on opening night next season. That could theoretically change by the time the trade deadline rolls around, but it is unlikely the team will move him that late in the season, unless the year is a disaster. More than anything, Leafs fans are in disbelief that they are going into another season with the core-four intact.
It's not April 1st, right? I can't believe
we are doing this for another year 🙃
Be sure to stay in the loop this summer to see of the Maple Leafs pull off any other major moves.
