Maple Leafs expected to go after Brandon Montour on free agency
The Toronto Maple Leafs are expected to go after Brandon Montour and another key defenseman in free agency this summer.
With Brad Treliving confirming his goal of filling the holes in his blue line ahead of next season during his end-of-year press conference, it's been widely believed that he'll go after a top defenseman on the free agent market.
Nick Kypreos of the Toronto Star wrote a paper in which he revealed Treliving will target Brandon Montour on the market if the Panthers don't sign the pending free agent after the Finals. The reporter also revealed the Leafs should show interest in Chris Tanev.
In his own words:
"It's no secret the Leafs will be targeting Florida's Montour if the pending free agent remains unsigned after this Cup final. Chris Tanev is another name that never left Treliving's radar.
It's conceivable the Leafs could land both with a combined spend of $12 million to $13 million (U.S.) of the roughly $19 million in cap space that's available to them. How different would the Leafs' blue line look next season with top-four pairings of Montour/Jake McCabe and Morgan Rielly/Tanev?" Treliving will have important decisions to make soon, and fans are eager to see what he does in the coming weeks.
With Ilya Lyubushkin and Joel Edmundson also seeking contracts, the Leafs GM could decide to keep one and go after either Montour or Tanev to complete his defensive unit.
