Pittsburgh Penguins GM Kyle Dubas revealed on the Cam and Strick Podcast that he regrets not keeping onto Mason Marchment and wishes he never made the deal.
While he's
firmly set to navigate the Penguins rebuild, Kyle Dubas had his fair share of work cut out for him while he headed the Toronto Maple Leafs, so hopefully this time around he'll find success beyond the regular season with a brand new crop of stars including potentially 2026 #1 overall pick Gavin McKenna.
That's going to take a lot of time however, and if the Penguins are going to want to acquire his services, they would do best to trade some top names; but perhaps Dubas is feeling a bit gun-shy.
Kyle Dubas Regrets Letting Mason Marchment Go
That hesitancy might be due to his regret for a particular trade he made while managing the Maple Leafs, and it's one that still haunts the team to this day.
Speaking on the Cam and Strick Podcast on Tuesday, Dubas discussed his tenure with the Maple Leafs and while he was complimentary, he was unbelievably candid, and admitted the team didn't do much to help themselves, but especially with the Mason Marchment trade:
I have lots of regrets I could name, there's a ton. But the biggest one though actually, is Mason Marchment.
Mason was so good, so competitive, he came up through our system, so that's the one that really hits above all others.
It was a perplexing deal that saw Toronto acquire Denis Malgin for Marchment, and fans could see it as one of the worst deals made in the last decade.
Toronto Searching For Marchment Replacement Ever Since
Marchment has turned into a quality top-nine player who has a fantastic two way game meanwhile Malgin is out of the league, and it seems Toronto has really shot themselves in the foot knowing how their scoring and offensive situation is now.
In 62 games, he had 47 points (25 goals, 22 assists) as well as a plus-15 rating, and has 131 points over the last three seasons with the Dallas Stars.
For Dubas, he made a lot of gambles with the Maple Leafs and while some of them ended up being a bit more beneficial than others, it seems that losing Mason Marchment after so much hard work is something he's continued to regret even over five years later.
But there's no point in dwelling on things, as what's done is done. It's just tough to add another 'what if?' to the list for the Maple Leafs as it grows longer as the years go by.
