Toronto Maple Leafs forward Kirill Marchenko fell awkwardly on his leg, and after trying to skate it off, he left the game early, which has Leafs fans feeling uneasy.

Kirill Marchenko fell awkwardly on his left leg after a shove in the Calgary Flames' zone. It was not a dirty play by any means, but it was enough to put Marchenko in a bad spot.

According to David Alter, he tried to put weight on it, but ultimately couldn't keep skating. He subsequently went to the locker room and has not been back since.

It has not been a particularly good game for the Leafs in Calgary. They are currently losing by a score of 3-1 and are having an extremely difficult time clawing their way back.

After three impressive wins in a row, it would appear as though the Maple Leafs are beginning to lose a little bit of steam here, which is not what the fans want to see.

However, a Marchenko injury certainly takes the wind out of the sails. He has been an integral part of the team's first line, and Auston Matthews has loved playing with him.

What now for the Maple Leafs?

With injuries to John Tavares also plaguing the roster, the Maple Leafs have no choice but to just hope that things work out with Marchenko and that he can return this evening.

If he doesn't come back this evening, and has to miss more time, then some depth players are going to be experiencing some real promotions.

However, it should be one step at a time for Jim Hiller and his squad. They still have a third period to play in Calgary, and that will be the true litmus test.

Should the Leafs come back and win this game, it will be a true test of their grit and their ability to handle adversity as a roster.

As for Marchenko, his injury is a developing story and we will be sure to keep you updated.

UPDATE: Marchenko will not return, per an announcement from the team.
