Toronto Maple Leafs general manager John Chayka took a big swing with Kirill Marchenko, and reporters want to know if more is on the horizon.
Just one day before the start of the NHL regular season, Toronto Maple Leafs general manager John Chayka made a swing that numerous fans could never have seen coming.
He devised a six-player trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets in which the two big centerpieces were Matthew Knies and Kirill Marchenko.
So far, the Maple Leafs have won that trade, although it is entirely too soon to say if this will continue to be the case over the long haul.
Regardless, it was proof that Chayka is not afraid of making a big move and shaking up the entirety of the NHL in the process. It's ultimately why he was hired by Keith Pelley.
John Chayka isn't done
According to David Alter, ahead of the Leafs' game against the Calgary Flames, Chayka was asked if he would be open to another blockbuster trade.
Chayka offered up a head-turning answer to the question, simply saying, "yes." However, he did not hint at what such a blockbuster deal would even look like.

If you have been paying attention to Maple Leafs headlines lately, then you know that the team is in desperate need of a defenseman. Someone to play on the second pairing who also brings a stay-at-home mentality to the blue line.
The Leafs would also prefer to get younger. Their blue line is aging, with Morgan Rielly, Chris Tanev, Darren Raddysh, and Oliver Ekman-Larsson occupying spots on the roster.
Guys like Simon Edvinsson are proving to be realistic options for the Maple Leafs right now, although it remains to be seen whether or not the Leafs will be able to pull that off.
Chayka would need to give up valuable assets, which means Easton Cowan and Ben Danford. At this time, that doesn't appear to be in the cards.
The Leafs' situation is fascinating, and with a general manager like Chayka, it is clear that the Leafs won't just sit around and be content with what they have.
Do you believe John Chayka will do another blockbuster this season?
