According to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger on a recent episode of Overdrive, Kiefer Sherwood may not re-sign with Vancouver as Toronto keeps an eye on things.

For Vancouver's Kiefer Sherwood, he seems to be in a category all on his own when it comes to the entire NHL. An atypical power forward, he puts in an elevated amount of effort and will genuinely hit everything that moves.
You'd think he would be one dimensional then, but he's emerged as a true goal-scoring presence with silky smooth hands and underrated speed. He's one of a kind, and that's making things difficult for Vancouver especially since he's in the last year of his contract.
And TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger believes that there could be a trade brewing if they are unable to sign the pending free agent.

What Dreger's update really means for Kiefer Sherwood's future

Dreger was a guest on TSN's Overdrive and mentioned that there is no guarantee the Canucks will be able to re-sign Sherwood, and could put him on the trade block:
There's no guarantee that they're going to extend this guy; he could become legit trade fodder for the Canucks, but that'll happen closer to the trade deadline.

Obviously there are still months between now and the deadline, plus an entire Olympic break to get things sorted out.
But if Sherwood keeps playing himself into a huge pay raise, the Canucks might be hesitant to commit, and he may want to test the market.
So to avoid any issues, they may decide to cut ties which plays perfectly into the hands of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

How Kiefer Sherwood fits the Maple Leafs' need for a cheap, aggressive depth forward

Toronto needs a nonsense-free, hard-working and physical body to give Craig Berube more options up front.
He can play anywhere in he lineup as well on borh the PP and PP units and would be an upgrade over Max Domi and would give the team another physical force alongside Dakota Joshua.
He's only at $1.5-million this season which is a massive bargain for the Canucks, but they aren't going to get that for long. We heard reports previously that Sherwood may be earning upwards of nearly $5-million a year.
With a lack of important contracts and a heavy emphasis on indemnity changes, adding Sherwood would help the Maple Leafs now and down the line, and still leave them money to spare.
