Kiefer Sherwood's $5.75M deal sets new market for Bobby McMann trade

Kiefer Sherwood signed a brand new extension Wednesday and with that it set a massive price tag on Bobby McMann which makes Toronto's decision a little easier as they get a better idea of what an extension costs and why trading him now is best.
Sherwood, 28, signed a five-year, $28.75-million deal with the San Jose Sharks that will keep him signed through the 2031 season. He was acquired earlier in the season by the Sharks from Vancouver for two second-round picks.
It's a huge leap from the current $1.5-million AAV he's earning and gives the Sharks a fantastic dual-threat on the ice to help protect their young roster.
He has 25 points in 49 games split with Vancouver and San Jose but has added an astounding 238 hits already this season. There's two things he's known for, hitting guys and scoring goals. While he's dealt with injuries since coming over, there's no doubt he is going to be a huge factor in terms of energy and putting pucks in the net.
Sherwood extension spells bad news for Maple Leafs regarding Bobby McMann extension
But knowing that Sherwood has signed his huge extension, all eyes turn to arguably the player most similar to him on the market right now: Bobby McMann.
McMann, 29, doesn't hit as much as Sherwood though he still has 135 hits in 60 games to go along with 32 points (19 goals, 13 assists) while also playing top line minutes alongside Auston Matthews.
He makes $1.35-million and based off of Sherwood's new deal, that would be a 326% increase in salary; an absurd number based off only one and a half years of production.
The main difference between McMann and Sherwood is that the former has some of the fastest legs in the league, and his ability in transition to break from the defense and go one on one is elite. For a team who plays a quick transition game and flies on outlet passes -- he would offer a wonderful addition.
Right now, Toronto is in a bit of a similar spot to Vancouver when they dealt Sherwood. The playoffs aren't in sight, the team needs draft assets, and dishing off veterans on expiring deals really is the only option at this point.
But the difference is that Vancouver has actually been proactive in their affairs meanwhile Toronto continues to mull decisions (including re-signing McMann). There's nothing this team can buy right now barring Connor McDavid that would turn things around -- and the forwards aren't the issue.
The Comparison: Bobby McMann vs. Kiefer Sherwood

Seeing as both players offer very similar play styles, were making near identical money, and roughly the same age, seeing that Sherwood extended for a long time on a fairly lucrative deal all things considered, it should give the Maple Leafs an easier time deciding on McMann.
They can't afford to pay him that much, and without a hometown discount it's more than likely he suits up elsewhere within the coming days.
