Key takeaways from the Toronto Maple Leafs' 2026-27 Prospect Showcase

With the 2026-27 Prospect Showcase wrapped up for the Maple Leafs, HockeyPatrol takes a look at some of the stories coming out of this past weekend.

This weekend marked the Toronto Maple Leafs' Prospect Showcase, and though it was a mixed bag in terms of results, there was a lot to take away from it. After coming away with a 4-3 OT loss to the Ottawa Senators on Saturday, they stormed back with a 6-4 against the Winnipeg Jets on Sunday.

Sunday's contest saw the Maple Leafs get three goals from their blueline, as Hayes Hundley, Vinny Borgesi, and Alexander Bilecki all found the back of the net, meanwhile Harry Nansi continued his outstanding performance by adding an empty-netter.

Tinus Luc Koblar's weekend has him poised to head to the Marlies

But the true standout from the entire weekend has to be Tinus Luc Koblar. The Norwegian pivot managed three assists on Sunday, and looked like a savvy veteran on the ice, driving the offence and looking unbelievably confident:

On Borgesi's goal, Koblar had managed to take the puck in the neutral zone, skate into the zone, and dish the puck off. But in doing so, he also immediately crashed the net knowing that Borgesi was going to take a shot.

He must have taken what Steve Sullivan said post-game on Saturday to heart, where Sullivan admitted that perhaps some rest and a refocusing will bring him more success. Boy did it, as those three assists and the utter confidence at his age already shows that he could be ready to make that leap.

Training camp starts Monday, and with him desperate to stay in North America knowing there isn't much room for error, Koblar may have just earned himself a chance with the Marlies. Which would bring him one step closer to his ultimate goal - a spot with the Maple Leafs.

Toronto's blueline explosion a positive sign for the future

While there's a lot of talk about Koblar, as well as other standouts like Harry Nansi, and the ultimate hype-bringer in Gavin McKenna (despite skipping out) we have to give credit to the Maple Leafs blueline for coming through.

Sunday saw three players score, and it wasn't that they were your typical shots. Hundley's arguably could be the more 'traditional' as he ripped a wrist shot from the point. But Bilecki's goal was him pinching in from a rebound and going top shelf, and Borgesi's (clip above) saw him take a shot at the lower hashmarks.

That's evidence that Toronto's shift to more mobile and offensive defenders is starting to pay off, and the team overall this weekend looked a lot more aggressive and confident. Even camp invite Matyas Man had some pretty decent chances, and was taking more opportunities despite being typically a more shutdown player.

There were always questions about the Maple Leafs' defensive future, but their weekend performance showed that at the very least, the offensive side gained a boost.

While you can't take too much from a weekend slate of prospect games, what we did see in that timeframe is a net positive for the Maple Leafs. They not only have Koblar potentially ready to make the jump, but their decision to focus on the blueline is paying off.
