Fifth-round Maple Leafs draft pick on the cusp of becoming a bona fide NHL star

Miroslav Holinka was the Toronto Maple Leafs' fifth-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, and with 80 points in junior hockey last season, he appears poised to make the leap to professional hockey.

In his first season with the Edmonton Oil Kings, the Czech National had 19 goals and 45 points in 47 games. However, in his second season, he made a huge leap with 37 goals and 80 points in 59 games. Furthermore, he played one game with the Toronto Marlies and got an assist in the process.

Now, the forward is at the prospect challenge, and he is already making an impression around the league. An impression that the Maple Leafs simply cannot ignore right now.

Allan Walsh calls Holinka "The Real Deal"

During last night's prospect challenge game against the Ottawa Senators, Holinka caught the attention of NHL agent Allan Walsh, who was quick to make a bold proclamation.

The agent stated that Holinka is a "treat" for Leafs fans and that the forward is also "the real deal."

Toronto Maple Leaf fans are going to be in for a treat as they get to know forward Miroslav Holinka.

These are strong words, especially for a fifth-round draft pick who was considered as a project prospect when he was first drafted. The 20-year-old has developed ahead of schedule, and he is giving the Leafs lots to think about.

Holinka's path to the NHL

The Maple Leafs are already filled to the brim with depth this season; however, Holinka still has a path to some NHL playing time.

If he impresses during the preseason, Holinka could earn solid minutes in the AHL with the Marlies. From there, injuries could very well force the Leafs into a position where they want to give Holinka an opportunity.

Of course, Holinka still has lots of development to go, and the Leafs should not bank on anything just yet. However, a 6-foot-2 forward who can score at a high clip is the kind of player Leafs fans typically salivate over.

As camp goes on, he will remain one of the premier players to watch.
