John Tavares is a wizard on the ice and a bonafide saint off it, and his record-breaking fundraiser set the tone for exactly the type of person he strives to be.
For the last eight years, John Tavares has been a staunch leader both on and off the ice for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Captaining the squad in only his second year with the team, Tavares has been not only one of the most reliable and consistent players on the ice but someone who cares deeply about the community off it too.
A very charitable and philanthropic person, Tavares has his own charitable endeavour known as the John Tavares Foundation, where he helps provide education, athletic opportunities and community support to those kids who may not have access.
He's no stranger about helping where he's needed, and even disregarding his on-ice accomplishments - he's made a name for himself.
A record-breaking night for the John Tavares Foundation
It was another successful event for Tavares as well, with the most recent 2026 Brighter Futures Gala taking place. The event ended up raising a total of $596,055 which will help give kids and families a lot more access and ability to have meaningful and successful lives:

The event also features appearances by several NHLers including Easton Cowan, Scott Laughton, Steven Lorentz and even a surprise appearance by Max Domi - who is currently dealing with some serious injury concerns.
It's wonderful to see his teammates from now and previous come together and share in this moment and it's not surprising to see guys like Domi and Lorentz there as both are known for their charitable work and community ventures.
How the gala will support children and families across Canada
While the exact logistics of the money being spent will obviously be kept within the Foundation's books, we can at least take a guess based off Tavares' own mission statement:
To create a positive and lasting impact, we launched our foundation to ensure kids everywhere are provided with the tools to take part in their community, awaken their inner passions, and transform their potential into possibilities.
Children are our future and it's important we empower kids to be kids, families to be families and enable communities to thrive.
That includes a backpack program where kids in need received what they needed to be prepared for school, and there was over $20,000 donated to help rebuild Alexandria Park to help make it a much cleaner, safer, and accessible experience for families.
The Foundation has also delivered over 14,000 pounds of food to Indigenous Youth in remote Western Canada (as per the website). Also features on the Board of Directors in addition to Tavares is former NHL player Cody Goloubef and Kimber Auerbach - the New York Islanders' Director of Communications.
So it's clear the Foundation has not only a strong footing in the community, but has the support of people Tavares trusts.
All credit to John Tavares and everything he does for the community because if he's not able to lead the Maple Leafs as captain, he can at least lead Toronto into a better future.
