With John Tavares expected to join Team Canada for the IIHF World Championships, it shows that even at 35 years old — he can prove all the critics wrong.

Enjoying his second-straight 70 point season along with his third 30-goal season in his past five years; it's safe to say that John Tavares is still not only chugging along, but thriving even as he gets older.
Like a fine wine, he seems to get better with age and the fact that he still put in a 100% effort regardless of circumstance should be admired. He never gave up even if the team did, and even during a tank he's shown he still cares immensely.

Darren Dreger confirming the Team Canada invite shifts the entire conversation around the veteran

Which is why it's not too shocking to hear that he's still wanting to play hockey even if his season is expected to be over. It's reported that Tavares is going to likely join Team Canada for the IIHF World Championships, a tournament he has a ton of familiarity with:
Let’s start with Toronto Maple Leafs leader, John Tavares. Tavares has often played for his country, he often accepts the invitation and takes the call.

The belief is that he will do it again to extend his year as the Toronto Maple Leafs obviously aren’t making the playoffs. - Darren Dreger, Insider Trading 04.14.26

It also would make complete sense if he were to be invited given the entire front office staff is made up of former Maple Leafs executives; they'll know better than anyone.
Always the staunch teammate, his nomination for the King Clancy shows that he is integral to the locker room and the greater community, and as someone who doesn't lead the team anymore with a 'C' — he does a great job indirectly leading.
Which is why those who are still doubting Tavares need to start becoming believers. He hasn't slowed down, his durability is elite, and it always seems like he finds another gear when it comes to representing Canada.

Forget the exhausting season because going to Switzerland is an absolute character flex

If Tavares were invited and accepts, it would mark the fifth time he's represented Canada at the World Championships. In 31 career games he's posted 36 points (18 goals, 18 assists) but has yet to win a medal with the team at the tournament.
But that's pretty darn impressive that he's been not only selected to play, but has continued to dominate internationally. There was a 12 year gap between World Championships for Tavares, but he put up his highest total in 2023-24.
Like I said before, he ages like a fine wine.
Though it's just another notch on the belt of one of the more accomplished players when it comes to international play.
If he wins a medal it will finish the Grand Slam for him (World Junior, Spengler, World Championships, World Cup) and he very well could be considered one of Canada's best ever.
There's also a good reason why Tavares was selected, as it's hard to find such a loyal and dedicated leader who is willing to do what it takes to win. With a fantastic coaching staff willing to work with him — they could come together to make something special.
It goes to show you that for Tavares, age is just a number not a handicap.
