John Chayka critical of prior trade talks regarding Matthew Knies

Maple Leafs GM John Chayka took issue with how the previous front office approached Matthew Knies' trade talks and put them fully to bed.

In his press conference on Wednesday, John Chayka addressed a ton of different topics which included updating fans on the status of several players including Max Domi and Chris Tanev, while also mentioning that despite the swath of changes - the focus should be on what they can do, not what they did.

One talking point though concerned Matthew Knies, as the young power forward's name has been brought up in various trade rumours over the past few months. There was a last-minute deal that fell through due to a miscommunication, and even talks he could be involved in a potential Zach Werenski blockbuster.

But he's still a member of the Maple Leafs and looks to be a focal point of the lineup this season and beyond, with GM John Chayka confirming as much while also putting the previous regime on blast.

Chayka answered a question regarding his thoughts on the Knies trade situation and he mentioned that whatever talks were held previous have zero reflection on their plans for Knies going forward:

I have answered this a few times, but maybe the part that gets lost is that previous discussions or previous work done by the previous management group might have bled over into these discussions.

From our side, we have been consistent with Matthew that he is an important part of our team.

Basically, Chayka is saying that any information regarding a Knies trade has to do with what Brad Treliving and his group of assistants did and whatever rumours have come out of this summer have nothing to do with their current plans.

It makes sense as well that even though Knies was reported to have been a target in a Werenski deal, only Easton Cowan and Ben Danford were reported to have been part of a legitimate offer instead, only validating Chayka's claim they want to hold onto Knies.

Chayka's comments should put any Knies trade talk to bed

But that should definitely give any anxiety-ridden Maple Leafs fans some much needed reassurance, as any news that Knies is headed out of town is put to rest.

As it should be too, because there's no reason to really get rid of him unless something genuinely impossible to pass up comes along like a Connor McDavid or Cale Makar trade - and those aren't happening.

Knies has to still prove he can take things to the next level though, and it may be best to let him thrive against weaker matchups at first and ease him back to that top offensive level but he's proven he can be effective no matter where you put him on the ice.

With a long-term deal on a frankly, bargain-basement deal compared to others around the league and a chance to build off an impressive 2025-26 season, Matthew Knies is sticking around the Maple Leafs lineup with management fully committed to seeing his career play out.
