The Toronto Maple Leafs are officially reaching out to free agent Jonathan Toews as he makes his NHL comeback after a two-year hiatus.
When news broke that Jonathan Toews was looking to make a comeback next season after a two-year injury hiatus, fans immediately jumped
on the hope the Maple Leafs might sign the three-time Cup winner.
Maple Leafs officially reach out Jonathan Toews as comeback looms
Well that hope might become a reality if things work out, and the team is already working towards a potential deal, having officially reached out to Toews and his camp.
Though there is nothing guaranteed, if the Maple Leafs were to sign him, it could add a great veteran presence who has a huge chip on his shoulders after so much time away.
Adding a player like
Toews would bring an incredible amount of leadership and experience. He has 883 points in 1067 games (372G, 511A), three Stanley Cup wins, a Conn Smythe, a Selke, and is part of the NHL's 100th Anniversary Team.
He missed the last two seasons after dealing with Chronic Immune Response Syndrome as well as feeling the effects of long-COVID.
But it doesn't just bring a future Hall of Famer to Toronto, but it could lead to another big signing.
Wouldn't it be a storybook season if both Toews and pending free agent Patrick Kane were to join forces once again?
The two are intrinsically linked, and having been the leaders of the Blackhawks dynasty in the early-to-mid 2010's, not only is the familiarty already there, but Kane seeing Toews back should motivate him too.
Plus seeing him sign in Toronto might open up the possibility we see Kane, and even on top of that selling point, getting the chance to play with
Auston Matthews and form an American powerhouse is pretty a pretty enticing factor.
Kane has 1,343 points in 1,302 games (492G, 851A), in addition to three Cups, an Art Ross, a Hart, and Calder winner. The fact that Toronto might have the chance to add a duo with a combined 2,226 points on the cheap is astounding, especially in this day and age.
He's coming off a very solid season in Detroit where he had 59 points in 72 games, and while he won't necessarily be the most expensive option, he will command at least $3-4M per season.
It depends on how long or even if Toews signs, and we don't even know who else is in the mix. Could his former club, Chicago be a potential destination? Anaheim just hired his old coach in Joel Quenneville and perhaps he heads to less pressure there?
Either way you look at it, at least the Maple Leafs have started to put out feelers on what it'll take to bring in Jonathan Toews, because if he's motivated and healthy; he can be a huge game changer.
