Insider Bob McKenzie Reveals Timeline for John Klingberg's Contract Announcement
TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie has revealed new details on the pending return of defenseman John Klingberg and the Toronto Maple Leafs interest.
Bob McKenzie has revealed major news in the signing of defenseman John Klingberg, who is looking to the return to the NHL.
Klingberg, who was signed to a one-year contract by the Leafs in the 2023-24 season, lasted just 14 games before being shut down in November 2023 due to a hip injury that later caused him to miss the rest of the season to undergo surgery, a hip resurfacing that has caused players such as Nicklas Backstrom and Ryan Kesler to have not played since, but also caused little issue for Patrick Kane.
Bob McKenzie's new reporting indicates the Leafs could be one team in on Klingberg to bring him back on the roster, but faces competition.
Leafs Among Teams Linked To John Klingberg In Potential Reunion
A report from Chris Johnston in 'The Athletic' named the Edmonton Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Ottawa Senators, and the Dallas Stars as teams that have interest in a deal for Klingberg.
Bob McKenzie spoke on the status of Klingberg, saying a deal is coming soon, although where will be the question.
Well, it's getting closer to a resolution. I would expect in the next day or two that Klingberg is going to sign with somebody on a contract for the balance of this season...
The Edmonton Oilers, the Dallas Stars, the Toronto Maple Leafs are three teams that are very much in the mix. Is Toronto a frontrunner?
I wouldn't go so far as to say that but they are in the mix and we are probably 24-to-48 hours from getting a resolution.
He played 14 games for the Leafs but his hip was really bad at the time. He got the resurfacing done which is something Patrick Kane is one of the few guys that's been successful in being able to come back from that.
So Klingberg gets a chance to try and get back on the ice here with somebody, maybe the Leafs in the next week. - Bob McKenzie
While the Toronto Maple Leafs are discussed as a potential suitor for Klingberg, bringing him right where he left off, McKenzie's comments imply the potential of a reunion for Klingberg being possible instead in Dallas, as well as the possibility Edmonton is where Klingberg ends up.
The Toronto Maple Leafs may be interested in a reunion with Klingberg, a player who struggled in his first stint with the Leafs due to a clear problem later identified as being his hip.
He'll be an uncertainty returning to pro hockey, but at league minimum low-risk with potentially a much higher reward.
