Maple Leafs forward Michael Pezzetta explained how important it was to be able to get a chance to play for the team he grew up admiring, appearing on the JD Bunkis Podcast on Tuesday.
When the Toronto Maple Leafs signed Michael Pezzetta away from the Montreal Canadiens this summer, it gave the team a great fourth-line forward who is going to bring punishing hits, an air of toughness, and some surprisingly solid defensive metrics.
He's clearly motivated for the upcoming season, and with a lot of expectations placed on him (mainly be a better Ryan Reaves), there's no doubt he's going to do whatever it takes to make sure he gets a spot on the roster and stays.

Already beaming from the chance to sign with the team in the first place, Pezzetta was all positives during his interview on Tuesday on the JD Bunkis podcast, and explained the importance of being able to put on the blue and white:
It's been my dream to put this sweater on my whole life. There was no doubt in my mind that if I had the opportunity to go to Toronto, I had to do that.
I had to live that and see how it works out.
Pezzetta follows in the footsteps of his teammates like John Tavares, Chris Tanev and Steve Lorentz; who all grew up diehard fans of the team and got the chance to don the Leafs sweater.
He admitted in his first media call that the feeling was overwhelming, calling the entire situation 'crazy', and feeling like he's on Cloud Nine being able to follow in the footsteps of the players he grew up admiring.
What Michael Pezzetta will do for Toronto
Well first and foremost, he's going to bring the pain. Pezzetta has thrown over 700 hits in his very short career (710 in 200 games) and the two seasons previous to 2024-25, he had a combined 554 hits.
But what he'll also bring is a much more offensive game than that of Ryan Reaves, who is also getting up there in age and is a few steps behind, with a game that isn't tailored for the modern NHL.
Pezzetta however has some solid underlying metrics, the ability to add 5-10 goals a season with 200+ hits, and a relentless passion to win.
Combined with Scott Laughton and Steven Lorentz, Pezzetta combines to make a terrifyingly physical and aggressive fourth line, and one that not only can play elite defense, but also score more often than you'd think.
So Pezzetta is going to bring the heat this upcoming season and with that heat comes the most important thing of all: Passion.
