The goaltender Cam Talbot was linked to the Toronto Maple Leafs by Jonas Siegel of The Ahtletic.

Set to enter the free agent market on July 1, Cam Talbot of the Los Angeles Kings was linked to the Maple Leafs.

The Kings traded Pierre-Luc Dubois to the Washington Capitals in return for goalie Darcy Kuemper. With Talbot needing a new contract and Kuemper coming in, Talbot will likely part ways with the Kings.

If he does, the Maple Leafs could be interested.

Here's what Jonas Siegel wrote in a recent paper for The Athletic:

"One I've been wondering more and more about for the Leafs is Cam Talbot. Now, would a Woll-Talbot twosome feel like an awesome outcome for the Leafs? Not exactly. However, unlike Laurent Brossoit, Anthony Stolarz, Kevin Lankinen, Alex Nedeljkovic, or Scott Wedgewood, Talbot has been a longtime starter in the NHL."

Talbot, 36, could be a great mentor to Joseph Woll until the young goalie is ready to fill the number one role.

He likely won't ask for a lot of money in free agency, and as highlighted by Siegel, he already reached a deal with Leafs general manager Brad Treliving in the past:

"Talbot is also familiar to Treliving, who signed him to a one-year deal with the Flames on the first day of free agency in 2019. He went 12-10-1 during the regular season, with a .919 save percentage. In 10 playoff games that spring, he posted a .924 save percentage."

"Another one-year deal for right around the $1 million Talbot took from Los Angeles last summer might be preferable to the Leafs signing someone younger with more upside but with less experience and more risk, to a lengthier, pricier contract."

When he was asked to open up on his intentions, Talbot was clear that he wants to win and would love a multi-year contract:

"Opportunity to win. Obviously, that's a big one for me at this point in my career. I haven't won yet; I would love to before I'm done."

«For me personally, I would love multi-year, for sure."

Treliving can offer him all of the above. If the Leafs can manage to give him a multi-year deal around $1M, it could be a smart decision for both sides.

Stay tuned for further details or developments about the Maple Leafs' goaltending situation.
