The Toronto Maple Leafs need to find goaltending help to chase a Stanley Cup, and now it's been revealed how hard they chased former Flame Jacob Markstrom.
Now, unsurprisingly, a new report has revealed Toronto's interest in Jacob Markstrom, which doesn't come as any shock given that GM Brad Treliving was the man to sign Markstrom to Calgary in the first place.
However, the report won't make many Maple Leafs fans happy, as it is revealed the team made a similar offer to the Flames, with Craig Conroy ultimately taking the Devils deal, likely due to Markstrom's NMC decision.
On Goalies: Talk about how Detroit is in the goalie market but Yzerman said he's not looking for someone who will only be there for 2-3 years. Toronto's offer for Markstrom was similar to New Jersey's. #LGRW #LeafsForever #Flames #NJDevils #NHL
With Darcy Keumper also moved to Los Angeles, that's two top goaltending names off the board for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and while Joseph Woll showed promise as a starter in the playoffs, he can't be the only answer in net for Toronto.
It's unclear what their offer to Calgary is, but given similar value, it was likely a first-round pick and a player like Timothy Liljegren or Nick Robertson, but ultimately, it was Markstrom's decision given the full NMC that Treliving handed him.
Maple Leafs offer:
Timothy Liljegren, 2025 1st Round Draft Pick
Flames offer:
Jacob Markstrom
There's still options out there for the Maple Leafs, but at least knowing they were in on Markstrom shows they are being aggressive as they look to address a major need.
