Elliotte Friedman reported on his latest 32 Thoughts podcast that Brayden Schenn is available for a trade, and discussed the Toronto Maple Leafs' past interest in the veteran forward.

Reports surfaced earlier that St. Louis Blues GM Doug Armstrong was ready to discuss potential trade offers for Brayden Schenn and Justin Faulk as the team works through a challenging start to the season, currently last in the Central Division standings with a 5-8-3 record.

What Elliotte Friedman reported on Brayden Schenn's status in St. Louis

Adding additional context, NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman revealed that several teams are interested in Schenn, mentioning the previous connection to the Toronto Maple Leafs:
Brayden Schenn's name's been out there; Ottawa went after him a couple years ago; Toronto went after him last year; Schenn's got less protection this year.

The less protection that Friedman is referring to Schenn's 15-team no movement clause which kicked in this season. Prior to that, he had a no-trade clause which prevented him from being traded without his permission.
The reason Friedman referenced Toronto is because Schenn's name surfaced around last season's trade deadline before the club acquired Scott Laughton and Brandon Carlo instead.

How Schenn's contract and past Maple Leafs interest shape the trade conversation

Schenn, 34, making $6.5-million for the next three seasons (including this one) is a player who has 1,038 games played thus far in his career, to go along with 691 points (280 goals, 411 assists), 2,197 hits, and 608 PIM.
With Toronto searching for a top-six forward, Schenn's production and winning experience could offer Toronto a different look in their top six. He has experience playing under Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube, winning the Stanley Cup with him in 2019.
The Maple Leafs haven't had a problem scoring goals, as they rank third in the NHL with 59 goals for however also rank 30th in goals against with 62.
Schenn can offer assistance defensively and his career possession numbers are above average (54.7 Corsi Rating) and has a solid 18.8 DPS, providing reliable and consistent defense.
Whether or not they decide to engage in any future discussions depends on their cap situation, though acquiring him would give the team a player under contract during their win-now window.
As St. Louis mulls their options with their veteran players, Schenn remains a player to monitor for teams evaluating experienced forward help.
