Elliotte Friedman Reports Former Maple Leafs $21M Forward Placed on Waivers
A former Toronto Maple Leafs forward has been placed on waivers after signing a massive deal only one season prior.
Engvall, 28, had 3 goals and 6 points in 20 games for the New York Islanders this season. Engvall has played six games as well in the AHL with New York's affiliate in Bridgeport.
Engvall has already been on waivers once this season, going unclaimed in October.
Last season, Engvall had 10 goals and 18 assists for 28 points in 74 games played for the New York Islanders.
Engvall had 18 goals and 25 assists, for 43 points in 112 games played for the Islanders in his short time there.
Engvall had 60 goals and 126 points in 338 games played in six seasons with both the Maple Leafs and Islanders. His best season came in 2021-22 when he scored 35 points then followed it up with a career-best 17 goals in 2022-23.
Engvall is in the second year of a 7-year contract he signed in the summer of 2023, and never lived up to the expectations that Lou Lamoriello and company demanded of him.
The 24-year-old Wahlstrom has 2 goals and 4 points in 27 games for the New York Islanders this season.
A graduate of the United States National Team Development Program (NTDP) and Boston College in the NCAA, Wahlstrom has spent six seasons with the Islanders.
For his career he has 36 goals and 35 assists for 71 points in 220 games played in the NHL, all with New York.
It remains to be seen if any team will be willing to claim the veteran forward off waivers for such a high price, but for a team desperate enough to add Engvall's potential, it could end up being a steal.
