Craig Berube Responds to Growing Concerns About Maple Leafs Goalie Anthony Stolarz
Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube is still confident in Anthony Stolarz even though the goaltender didn't necessarily have his best performance on Saturday night.
Two of Ottawa's four goals could be considered floaters, and much like the rest of the games, it seems that the Senators are more often lucky than good, and Anthony Stolarz hasn't been at his best over the last two games; a lethal combination.
Stolarz gave up four goals on only 21 shots, and had his worst game statistically so far. Granted, the winning goal he let in went through about six bodies and he had her shot of seeing it; but the fact remains that he still ended up saddled with the loss.
But for Craig Berube, he isn't too worried about his goaltender's struggles.
Anthony Stolarz Got Unlucky; No Issues Ahead: Craig Berube
Speaking to media after the game, Berube explained that he didn't blame Stolarz for the goal, and praised his goaltender for keeping them in it at times, with no issues going forward:
[Stolarz was] Solid. On the last goal, he can't see anything there. There were a lot of people in front of him on that shot. He made a lot of good saves for us. I thought he was comfortable and played well. I am not concerned about Stolarz.
It is kind of crazy to worry about Stolarz given that a) he's not going to be perfect, and b) Ottawa was hungrier and ended up getting the benefit of a shot on net; there's a reason they say get pucks towards the goal.
He's been everything Toronto has needed and then some, and while last night was a bit of a swing and a miss, you can't deny he's been fantastic.
Posting a 3-0-1 record,
Stolarz has a 2.29 GAA and .902 SV%; a number that's heavily skewed due to the fact Ottawa didn't have that many shots on Saturday.
But it's not like he's going to suddenly drop off the face of the Earth; it's the playoffs and he's played in now, four straight games. Perhaps it was a good idea to give
Joseph Woll the start on Saturday, but hindsight is always 20/20.
Tuesday night will come with its own series of questions, but the one that sticks out is this:
Why are you worried about one game? The Maple Leafs certainly aren't.
