Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube gave an update regarding Jake McCabe's status, and for fans, it's words that they may not necessarily want to hear.

While the Leafs were able to withstand their Saturday night opponents, the Columbus Blue Jackets, and dominate them to the tune of a 5-0 victory, and did so without both David Kampf and Jake McCabe who were both missing due to injury.
It was a great sign that the team can handle things without one of their top defensemen and top penalty killing forward. Fans hope that both men can return soon, especially with a slate of crucial games coming up. So will the team get their wounded back in time?

Day-To-Day: The Words Toronto Can't Afford To Hear

If you were to ask Craig Berube, you're going to have to take things 'day-to-day':
He is still day to day right now. I don't know if he will play in the next game or not. We'll see how the next couple of days go with him.
It's those dreaded three words that seem to spell a death sentence for Maple Leafs players this season. When you're day-to-day on Craig Berube's team, it's less 'Hey, you're just feeling a bit off so take it easy and we'll see' and more 'Let's pray that it's nothing serious.'
Numerous players have suffered the notion of being listed as day to day only to miss one, if not several weeks, and often leads to a more devastating announcement a few days down the road including Auston Matthews, Anthony Stolarz, and Max Pacioretty.
But given that Toronto can't really afford to have McCabe out too long, hearing that he's day to day is not exactly the news we want to hear, especially with a brutal stretch ahead.
Nicholas Robertson performed well in David Kampf's spot and scored the opening goal, a hopeful sign for the team come playoff time. Philippe Myers subbed in for McCabe and while he didn't score, he did add two blocks, a hit and was plus-2.
If the Maple Leafs can continue to play the way they have been recently, they're in a good spot, regardless of who laces up the skates.
But they would really, really like McCabe back sooner rather than later.
