Connor McDavid's interview at the Olympic Orientation Camp in Calgary might end up sparking some serious rumors that he may be coming home to Toronto next year.
The talk of the town this summer is Connor McDavid's future with the Edmonton Oilers. Undoubtedly the world's best player, he is
set to be a free agent next season and everyone is going to want their hands on him; if they can get them on him in the first place.
A lot of discussion is focused around what his cost is going to be and whether he is going to sign a short-term or long-term deal, but either way he's going to get paid.
What McDavid Said That Sparked the 'Coming Home' Chatter
But his comments at Team Canada's Olympic Orientation Camp show that while he is focused on Edmonton, he could be setting them up just to let them down later; and Maple Leafs fans might start getting excited:
I said at the end of June I had every intention to take my time with it and I still feel the same way. Take my time and go through everything. I have every intention to win in Edmonton.
While he isn't outright admitting that he wants to leave, you would think that he would have signed by now if he didn't want things to be a distraction, and his mention of "keeping all his option open" means that there is potential for him to leave.
Why the Leafs Angle Won't Go Away Anytime Soon
These comments certainly won't sway any of the fans' opinions that McDavid should come home, and there's a lot of positives that can come out of it and not just from a. hockey perspective.
Bringing in the world's best player, who is a self-professed childhood fan of the team would be the story of all stories, and it almost wouldn't matter what McDavid does; he would be seen as the savior of not only the Maple Leafs but the city as a whole.
There's never been any indication that McDavid wants to leave, and fans shouldn't necessarily think that this is the first indication he is headed to Toronto, but it does bring in a lot of questions regarding price, tenure, and if it'll potentially end up alienating their roster.
But as long as Connor McDavid is in blue and orange, rocking an Oilers crest on his chest, the Maple Leafs rumors aren't going to go away.
I guess the only way to stop them, is to just sign here and get it over with.
