With all the talk about Connor McDavid's future in Edmonton, TSN's Ryan Rishaug provided an integral update that shows that things are going to be taking their time.

Rumors have been rampant recently over Connor McDavid's future in Edmonton. Expected to be paid handsomely, and whether it's where he started or somewhere else, there's no doubt he's going to be the highest paid player in the league (at least by AAV).
It seems likely that he will stay given how integral he is to not only the team but the community he is deeply engrained in, but you can never count out the fact he might be able to find the exact same thing elsewhere.

What Today's Update Really Means for McDavid's Future

We haven't heard much about negotiations and things are expected to be cleared up ahead of the Olympic Orientation Camp in Calgary, however according to TSN's Ryan Rishaug; that is very unlikely:
On the McDavid contract, there hasn't been a back and forth with dollars and term to this point between the two sides. After taking some time to regroup after the season McDavid and agent Judd Moldaver of Wassermann are working through what the options are and what the ask will look like.

No firm timeline on this, and expect dialogue to continue.

McDavid expected to address the media at Olympic orientation camp today in Calgary.

It seems this is going to be a season-long storyline, and all Oilers fans can hope is that his contract negotiations aren't a distraction from trying to make their third straight Stanley Cup Finals appearance (and perhaps win one this time).
But if he is headed elsewhere, teams need to be on notice.

Why the Maple Leafs and Other Teams Are Watching Closely

Not only are Toronto, as well as every other team in the league looking to potentially field a ridiculous offer for McDavid should he hit the open market but they need to also look at Auston Matthews' future contract.
Both McDavid and Matthews share the same agent, and if Moldhaver believes he can get top dollar for McDavid now, imagine what he might be looking to get for Matthews when the cap is going to skyrocket.
It will also be important that Edmonton steers the ship safely through these tough waters as fans are going to be incredibly frustrated at losing out on McDavid and may feel like they wasted the last decade of their lives.
There are so many factors that teams need to be wary of, and it's going to depend heavily on their own stars as well; does Vegas say goodbye to Jack Eichel to bring in McDavid?

McDavid Admits He Wants No Contract Distractions

Though McDavid seems pretty content himself on staying in Edmonton, but revealed at the Olympic Orientation Camp on Wednesday that he was intent on winning with the Oilers and just wants to focus on hockey.
Even with McDavid's admission, it seems this is going to be a season-long storyline we all need to keep our eyes on.
