My guess is that it won't be an eight-yeat deal, probably less than that, likely 4, somewhere between $16-17M AAV; that's just a ballpark and the best I can gleam right now.
Not confident even saying it's a four-year deal, it makes sense to get eight and the last thing you want if you're Connor McDavid is to do this again.
But he has so much leverage and control that if Edmonton can't get it done, the best player in the world raises his hand and says 'I want out' they have no choice but to make it happen.
Signing a shorter term deal doesn't light a fire under Edmonton's arse that much, just something to keep in mind.
Plus, much like McDavid, he's going to be a huge fish in free agency and with every other team looking to put in an offer; it's better to be safe than sorry.
As well, Matthews can also ask to leave town if he feels he wants out, and is more than likely willing to work with the team to bring back a worthy return.
