Connor McDavid is going to potentially re-sign with the Edmonton Oilers for a shorter term according to Frank Seravalli, and he could end up cashing in twice.

A lot of the news in the last few weeks has been concerning Connor McDavid and a whole bunch of potential options. Some think he's going to re-sign, others think he's a shoe-in for a new home like Toronto; either way it's going to be quite the story to follow all season long.
But there hasn't been much noise from either Edmonton or McDavid's camp, and with reports that a deal would be announced around this time, it's getting a bit anxiety-inducing for Oilers fans.

Insider Breaks Down McDavid's Projected Contract

Though NHL Insider Frank Seravalli is here to try and quiet the chatter; at least for now.
Appearing on Bleacher Report, Seravalli explained that he believes Edmonton will end up bringing back their captain on an extension but it might not be as long as some hope:
My guess is that it won't be an eight-yeat deal, probably less than that, likely 4, somewhere between $16-17M AAV; that's just a ballpark and the best I can gleam right now.

Not confident even saying it's a four-year deal, it makes sense to get eight and the last thing you want if you're Connor McDavid is to do this again.

But he has so much leverage and control that if Edmonton can't get it done, the best player in the world raises his hand and says 'I want out' they have no choice but to make it happen.

Signing a shorter term deal doesn't light a fire under Edmonton's arse that much, just something to keep in mind.

How McDavid's Next Deal Could Impact the Maple Leafs' Long-Term Plans

With the potential for McDavid to sign for an eight-year deal, it sets the precedent for every other team who holds a superstar to lock them up long-term and that certainly includes the Maple Leafs.
Auston Matthews is making $13.25-million for the next three seasons, and is no doubt going to get an increase in AAV for his next deal just based off a rising cap alone.
So it wouldn't be surprising to see him signed for the same as McDavid would, a $16-17M deal, though there is the potential he ends up getting back to his 50-60 goal pace and could earn even higher.
Plus, much like McDavid, he's going to be a huge fish in free agency and with every other team looking to put in an offer; it's better to be safe than sorry.
As well, Matthews can also ask to leave town if he feels he wants out, and is more than likely willing to work with the team to bring back a worthy return.
It also means they need to shift gears come next season.
If he re-signs, there's no McDavid, but there could be someone like a Kiril Kaprizov or Rasmus Andersson. Next year's class is stacked to the brim with superstars, so if they miss out on McDavid it isn't the end of the world.
But they'd rather he didn't re-sign and entertained coming to play for his childhood team.
