According to a new report from David Pagnotta, if the Vancouver Canucks want to make a trade involving Kiefer Sherwood they prefer to do it sooner than later.

There's been a lot of discussion about Kiefer Sherwood and his trade availability this season. Vancouver is struggling mightily and have already dealt away franchise cornerstone Quinn Hughes as they look to retool.
Sherwood has emerged as a target due to his ability to score in bunches while also adding an elite level of physicality that really hasn't been touched over the past couple of seasons.
But as a pending free agent he is expected to get a huge payday and with the Canucks not going to commit to him, a trade seems likely. There are several teams who could use the power forward, and it might cost a pretty penny to bring him aboard.

Sherwood deal may happen much sooner than later

Plus, a new report shows that those who are looking to add Sherwood to their lineup needs to do so post haste.
David Pagnotta reported to the Hello Hockey podcast on Jan. 3 that the talk around Sherwood has picked up over the last week and sources tell him that the Canucks would rather get this done in the next couple weeks or so:
The talk, looked like this week, picked up on Kiefer Sherwood, and it sounds like we may see some activity there over the next week, two weeks; sounds like Vancouver wants to make this happen and not have it linger.

Whether GM Patrik Allvin thinks he can salvage the season or not, he's clearly looking to re-tool and bring in a brand new look to the Canucks lineup.
Getting rid of Sherwood would do that and while it would hurt their offense; if they are throwing in the towel they may as well get some assets.

Sherwood going to cost teams both now and July 1

Reports have surfaced that show Sherwood's trade cost being anywhere from a first-round pick to a second-rounder plus an NHL ready player. With more and more free agents being locked up, some clubs may end up overpaying for the chance to extend Sherwood in the summer.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are a team that are linked heavily to Sherwood, and while he could add a brand new dynamic to the team, they need to be sure they don't overpay and use whatever little assets they have to take a chance on him.
Plus, they will need to make sure they want to commit at least $5-million to a soon-to-be 31-year old who has just broken out.
Over the last three seasons (including 2025-26) Sherwood has 88 points in 187 games with Nashville and Vancouver (46 goals, 42 assists) but has added a staggering 894 hits in that span (including a mind-blowing 462 last year).
That type of production is going to be expensive, and it sounds like those who want to add such a unique presence like Sherwood are not only going to need to pay a lot, but do it quicker than they anticipated.
