Brad Treliving Reveals How Mitch Marner Controlled the Maple Leafs Before His Departure

Brad Treliving was extremely candid in explaining that his hands were tied a lot of the time, as Mitch Marner seemed to be the one pulling the strings.
While the dust settles after the Mitch Marner saga came to an end with a sign and trade to the Vegas Golden Knights, things are slowly coming together for both Marner as well as the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Leafs were going to give Marner away for nothing, but
a last minute truce ended up landing the team
Nicolas Roy; the 3C they've been desperate to add for years.
Whether it was to save face or a genuine gift as a final sendoff will forever be debated, but Marner is gone and we have to live with that.
Brad Treliving comments on Mitch Marner's negotiations
But he received a ton of criticism for how he handled free agency, and with his actions previous, where he declined multiple trades on the insistence he do it himself; it's fairly justified.
Brad Treliving is certainly thankful for Marner allowing him to get Roy, and he explained in his media presser after Day 1 of free agency that he didn't have many options with Marner, considering he wanted to play the long-game:
Certainly we approached Mitch to engage him on a contract. As is his right, Mitch and his representative wanted to wait until the year was done.... As is his right and was negotiated, Mitch has a full no-move, so he controlled the process.
Mitch Marner's camp held Toronto hostage
There's been a lot of hearsay and speculation about it not just being Marner who was giving the Maple Leafs a hard time, as it seems his father is also getting quite a bit of criticism.
It's also been rumored that Marner's family was none too happy with him being passed over as captain in favor of
Auston Matthews.
It seems that Toronto's hands were always tied, as they seemed to acquiesce to Marner's demands time and time again. But as good a player as he is in the regular season, the real test is going to be the postseason.
If Marner explodes for a flurry of points and shows up when it matters, you can chalk it up to the immense amount of pressure the fans and media put on him; but if he doesn't? Is Vegas going to be happy they committed to failure, and also deal with a camp that won't take criticism lightly?
Only time will tell whether or not Vegas is going to feel any type of buyer's remorse, but for the Maple Leafs: They finally remove the handcuffs of Mitch Marner, and allow them to freely enact their true game plan.
