Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving finally broke his silence regarding the report that Mitch Marner felt his safety and well-being was threatened thanks to fan behavior.
The
report that Mitch Marner received some supposed intense harassment on behalf of the Maple Leafs faithful has caused a lot of controversy. Some believe that the former forward genuinely had to deal with some insane fans, while several are refuting the story as some pieces don't add up.
Whatever your opinion, the fact of the matter is that Marner for whatever reason felt threatened, and for most people, family and safety is a top priority so personally for Marner it makes sense why he acted the way he did.
What Treliving's Response Signals About Leadership and Player Safety
However, the Maple Leafs aren't going to just let fans run rampant over their stars and they have strict rules and restrictions when it comes to fan interaction with the players.
Which is why
GM Brad Treliving explained that while Marner's concerns are indeed valid, the fact remains that he believes the team did everything in their power to help Marner if he felt in trouble, and was confident there wasn't any real harm:
In our business, your no. 1 priority is looking after your players, and I think we do a really good job of it.
I don't have any concerns that we don't do everything humanly possible to make sure that they're looked after, but in today's world, you never take anything not seriously.
In today's world; and it can go for Toronto, it can go for any market with social media, the lion's share of people can have good, honest discourse but there's always the ones that cross the line.
It's unfortunate, but we always take every precaution necessary to make sure our guys are looked after.
Why Player Security Has Become a Bigger Topic in Toronto
So it also seems to just confirm that the Maple Leafs were very protective of Marner and how it still remains questionable that the former star forward was the only one who felt in danger; heck even
William Nylander decided to ride the subway to no issues whatsoever.
Why is it that Marner is the only one targeted?
John Tavares and
Auston Matthews are equally at fault for failing in the playoffs. Sheldon Keefe failed to do anything for years, and we didn't hear anything negative towards them in the years the team disappointed.
That's a million people over the last decade of failure, with hours, days, weeks, and months to do something sinister as a measure of 'revenge' but nothing ever happened.
We heard Marner got yelled at when walking his dog; and while we don't know the conversation nothing major came of it. It's making a mountain out of a molehill.
For Treliving and the Maple Leafs, they are not going to mess around with their star players and have the utmost protection both on and off the ice for them.
It's starting to sound like Marner's exaggerating things to save whatever face he has left here.
