Brad Treliving Breaks Silence on Mitch Marner's Status with the Leafs
Brad Treliving gave some interesting insight into the Mitch Marner situation as questions still abound whether he is going to stick around or not.
It's a wild summer ahead of the Toronto Maple Leafs regardless of how the Stanley Cup Playoffs turn out. Maybe
this is the year the team has what it takes to make it not only past the first round, but make a deep run and potentially raise the Cup at the end of it all.
But a big success in the playoffs could lead to some huge consequences down the road. If Toronto ends up playing well enough, it could convince pending free agent Mitch Marner to stick around and win, potentially again if all works out this year.
So ahead of the playoffs, GM Brad Treliving spoke briefly on the Marner situation and while he wasn't really detailed in terms of his comments, what he did say should bring some intrigue for what'll happen in the future:
He's been a leader, he's been a top player and I think he's in a real good spot.
Besides stating the obvious, Treliving stating that Marner is in a good spot might lead some to think he's in a good spot to settle down with the team and continue on for potentially the entirety of his career much like his contemporaries.
Though if you read between the lines a little bit, you could also feel a bit of fear in Treliving's words. He's in a good spot to get paid handsomely this summer, and a swift first round exit or another disappointing finish with the team might see him headed elsewhere to lead a team all on his own.
The incredible season
Marner put together needs to be given due praise. Not only did he finally eclipse the 100-point mark, but he did so in style and finally etched his name firmly with the elites of the NHL; even if he was pretty much there already.
He finished fifth in points with 102, second in assists and easily put in the best overall performance of his career. His defense was on another level, and not only did he help Toronto secure the Atlantic Division, but he helped secure Canada's 4 Nations Face-Off victory with an assist to
Connor McDavid.
He was also nominated for the King Clancy Award by his teammates for his work with the Toronto community, and it just adds to the growing list of accomplishments for the superstar in 2024-25.
But with his GM keeping things a bit quiet in terms of his future with the team, it sounds like Marner is in a good spot regardless of where he ends up.
Let's just hope he decides it worth sticking around, and while a Cup isn't a dealbreaker; it would certainly help.
