Former Maple Leafs Forward Hits Waivers After Ending Season on a High Note
It was a bit of a dour note for Dryden Hunt, as the former Maple Leafs forward was waived by Calgary after putting in a solid performance in the season finale.
With the NHL regular season coming to a close, the Calgary Flames unfortunately just missed out on a playoff spot. Not for any lack of effort, and led by
Dustin Wolf; who looks to be elite in the near future, they made a strong push until the last couple weeks of the season.
So with their final game against Los Angeles on Thursday, the Calgary Flames finished on a high note with a 5-1 victory, plus seeing fantastic debuts from
Sam Morton and
Zayne Parekh who both scored in their debuts.
But one player who played well too was Dryden Hunt, who picked up two assists in the finale and looked solid and a part of Calgary's future plans.
Unfortunately for him, the Flames didn't think he will factor in, and waived the forward on Friday.
He heads back to AHL with the Calgary Wranglers if not claimed, and it spells the end of a very quiet season for him.
Playing in only five games this season, he did manage three assists and a minus-1 rating in 11:39 TOI.
Hunt has been a bit of a journeyman throughout his NHL career. Playing for six different teams in his career, he actually played for three separate teams in 2022-23 alone.
Constantly flipping teams due to waivers and free agency, Hunt's stop in Toronto was actually the result of Toronto trading Denis Malgin to Colorado. He didn't stay long, and only played in nine games with the team, but did score a goal and added 31 hits.
For his career,
Hunt has 54 points in 235 games while also adding 554 hits but is a minus-31 in those games.
While a strong performance couldn't save his spot on the roster, Calgary would be doing themselves a favor by keeping him around and it might not be the last time we'll see Hunt in Flames white red and yellow once again.
