Florida forward Brad Marchand was not too kind to the Maple Leafs' media contingent and believes they need to ease up on the constant criticism.
It certainly wasn't the ending the Maple Leafs, their fans or really anyone wanted.
Falling 6-1 to the Florida Panthers in Game 7 was perhaps the most dismal way to end the Core Four era, and create a tense environment in Leafs Nation.
Frustrated can't even begin to describe the feelings going through everyone's heads, and for sure the media is going to be hounding the heck out of the team for failing yet again.
Brad Marchand Tells Toronto Media To Ease Up On Maple Leafs
One person who won't be frustrated however is Brad Marchand, who joined some elite company with his eighth Game 7 victory and setting up a Conference Finals date with the Carolina Hurricanes.
Speaking to the media after the game, Marchand tried to credit the team for their perseverance and also gave the Toronto media an earful about their constant criticism of the team:
I think if you look at the heat this team catches, it's actually really unfortunate.
You know, they've been working and building something really big here for a while, and they were a different brand of hockey this year, and they're getting crucified, and I don't think it's justified.
It's not exactly hard to see where Marchand is coming from, considering the Maple Leafs are no doubt one of, if not the most criticized team in the NHL.
A lot of players will actually avoid playing in Toronto due to the consistent pressure, and it takes a very thick skin to survive.
But at the same time, Marchand must have forgotten the Leafs' Game 5 performance and Sunday's repeat. The team was outscored 12-2 in those games, and outshot 66-52 in those games; Florida dominated from pillar to post.
That won't make the media any less inquisitive though, and every move that Brad Treliving and Brendan Shanahan make are going to be scrutinized to the Nth degree, but sometimes you just need to let them do their jobs.
The media's job is to report news, comments, rumors, and all the happenings in the world of hockey, and for Brad Marchand he would like it if they gave the Maple Leafs a bit of a break now and again.
Besides, he's never going to, so someone has to.
