As Toronto fell to Florida in Game 7 on Sunday night, it was yet another disappointing end to the season for the Maple Leafs and another failure for Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, and the rest of the team.
Fans were furious and beyond frustrated with the result, and so too were the captain and his sidekick.
Speaking after Game 7's 6-1 drubbing, Matthews was not shy in hiding his disdain for some of his teammates' performance.
I just thought we had too many passengers throughout the rest of the game.
While that message might have some anger and frustration behind it coming from the captain, it's absolutely minuscule in comparison to the absolute firestorm of Maple Leafs fans and their reactions.
Mitch Marner also echoed the same sentiment as Matthews and received just about as much hatred from Leafs Nation.
The outrage can be felt from pillar to post, and for good reason. It's yet another dismal failure for a team with the highest expectations since the Auston Matthews and Core 4 Era begun.
Craig Berube also didn't hold back, and was pretty blunt in his observation for how his team performed not only in Game 7, but Game 5 where they had the home-ice advantage as well:
They were the better team, the more aggressive. You come home and you have to have that. You can't go into a game like this and not have everybody at their best.
We don't know exactly where the franchise is going to go from here, and there are a lot of questions to be answered in the coming weeks.
But for Mitch Marner and Auston Matthews to throw their team under the bus after underperforming themselves?
