All signs point to an extension for Maple Leafs goaltender Matt Murray
Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Matt Murray recently returned from bilateral hip surgery to start a rehab stint in the AHL. Today new comments from Auston Matthews have fans feeling like Matt Murray could be sticking around in blue and white beyond this season.
Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Matt Murray has dealt with a ton of adversity this season. Most of his season has been spent recovering from major hip surgery. With his contract up after the year many assumed his time with the Maple Leafs was coming to an end. However, new evidence suggests otherwise.
A new piece on Matt Murray came out recently and revealed that the veteran goaltender has been with the team the whole season. Despite not playing he has been in meetings and in the locker room with the guys.
UPDATE: Matt Murray never disappeared from the Leafs this season; he attended meetings and greeted the team after wins anonymously. His stall was also never emptied.
Last night after a long road to recovery Matt Murray returned to action. He played well and picked up a shootout win for the Toronto Marlies in the AHL.

With such a strong return to hockey, some are now wondering if NHL playing time and an extension are coming in the near future. This becomes especially true after hearing how Auston Matthews and other teammates feel about Matt Murray.
"I really admire the way he just comes in every day and he works," Auston Matthews said recently.
It remains to be seen if and when Matt Murray returns to the Maple Leafs this season. If he returns in the playoffs and has a good showing he could earn himself another contract with the team for the 2024-25 season.
