Treliving Analyzes Leafs Last Two Playoffs and has a Surprising Finding
Besides all the contract issues, one of the major expectations for Brad Treliving as new GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs will be more playoff success.
While the team finally made it past the first round in 2022-23, Toronto managed just one win before bowing out of the playoffs at the hands of the Florida Panthers.
Treliving told reporters he's already been analyzing the situation and he made a surprising statement about their last two appearances.
Tampa Bay Lightning
Treliving's statement was specific to the two series the Leafs played against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
In 2021-22, the Bolts beat Toronto in seven games in the first round. This year, the Maple Leafs finally got over the first round hump, beating Tampa 4-2 in their series. Despite that, Treliving said his analysis shows the Leafs played better during the loss in 2021-22.
"I thought collectively, Toronto played a better series last year against Tampa Bay and lost, than they did this year and won." - Brad Treliving
His Reasoning
Treliving explained that he felt Tampa simply got better bounces and more puck luck in their seven games series win than Toronto did, despite Toronto playing a more sound game.
Treliving has a lot of work to do as GM in one of, if not the most critical hockey market in the NHL. It seems the analysis is already well under way.
