Just about every Ontario-born NHL player has been linked to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Steven Stamkos has always been linked to Toronto ever since 2016 when he chose to sign an 8-year $68 million to stay with Tampa Bay, it was rumored that Toronto had offered him 7-years around $11 million in AAV.
The two-time Stanley Cup champion will be a free agent in 2025 which means it will be 12 months before the Leafs can sign him for free.
Stamkos is coming off a year where he had 34-goals and 84 points in 81games.
Toronto's roster
In order for the Leafs to afford the 33-year-old player superstar he would have to take a massive pay cut or the Leafs would lose one of their core four players to afford him.
The Leafs have been making headlines recently with talks of Nylander leaving the team and Matthews does not want to stay long term it could be a possibility that the Ontario-born Stamkos joins the Leafs.
The core four of the Leafs have shown they can't get it done in the post season so it might be time for a change.
