Jones At the Top Of His Art with the Maple Leafs

When he signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs, fans were a bit sceptic as to what could bring veteran goalie Martin Jones to the team.

His past inconsistencies worried a lot of people, but so far this season, he's showing that he still has the level it takes to perform in the NHL.

He had three solid games with the Maple Leafs, after struggling with the Marlies earlier in the season.

Since Joseph Woll was injured a few weeks ago, Jones took over and he's been impressive. He started by finishing off the game against the Senators with nine saves on ten shots. Then, he beat the Rangers by blocking 28 out of 31 shots, and an impressive shutout last night against the Penguins.

The Maple Leafs destroyed the Penguins 7-0. While Jones was perfect on the ice, he gave credit to the team, acting like a true leader.

"We didn't give them any life, any momentum. I wasn't asked to do anything crazy out there tonight; we were solid."

With Ilya Samsonov struggling, it might be the perfect moment for Jones to assume the starting role while Woll is sidelined. Samsonov currently holds a .878 save percentage, a 3.51 GAA, and a 13-1-5 record. In his last four games, he has gone 1-0-3 with a .897 GAA.

If his struggles persist, Sheldon Keefe may have no option but to rely more heavily on the undefeated veteran.

Jones, since joining the Leafs, has a flawless record of 3-0-0, with a 1.85 GAA and a .949 save percentage.

Could the Leafs consider trading Samsonov and his $3.55 million salary, to keep the Woll/Jones duo?

Currently, Jones's performance makes it highly unlikely that he would clear waivers. The Leafs might opt to carry three goalies for the time being as a precaution, but depending on their salary cap situation and trade scenarios on the table, they may have no choice but to trade one.
