Late in the 1st period, Calle Jarnkrok was called for goaltender interference for reasons that remain inexplicable. As Jarnkrok made his way to the net, the Canes' defender cross-checked him, causing the Leafs' forward to collide with their netminder. Despite Jarnkrok's apparent lack of intent to make contact with Kotchekov, he was penalized for goaltender interference.
This questionable call drew criticism from Sheldon Keefe, who has previously expressed dissatisfaction with officiating decisions. Back in December, he was fined $25,000 for demeaning conduct toward the officials during the game in St. Louis.
In the aftermath of this latest incident, Keefe could have to pay another fine for his behavior towards the referees. As the league continues to struggle with officiating concerns, Keefe's frustration appears to be shared by many coaches.
The NHL needs to improve the quality of refereeing. This issue has gone long enough.
