Rumour: Mark Scheifele linked to the Toronto Maple Leafs
There's one year left on Mark Scheifele's contract, and he really doesn't want to spend it in Winnipeg.
He officially requested a trade after the end of the season, and it looks like the Jets aren't in a rush to make it happen. Don't be surprised if they decide to wait until the trade deadline to get the biggest possible return.
Many teams would pay a hefty price to acquire a player like him ahead of the playoffs, such as the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Scheifele Linked to the Leafs
The Maple Leafs are Scheifele's hometown team. That alone could be enough to entice his return. If not, the top-end talent on the Leafs' roster might do the trick.
Playing in the top-six alongside Matthews, Nylander, Marner, and Tavares is an opportunity that doesn't present itself often.
However, the salary cap situation makes a trade difficult. Treliving could surprise us all and pull it off, but if he doesn't, he might opt to wait for Scheifele to become a free agent next year.
Scheifele, 30, scored 68 points, including 42 goals, last season but disappointed in the playoffs, scoring only one goal in four games.
