Report: Auston Matthews is Not Toronto's Priority
It may seem crazy, but one report states the Toronto Maple Leafs are looking to solve another big issue before moving on to contract talks with their star player.
Top Priority
According to Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, the priority for the Toronto Maple Leafs and new GM Brad Treliving is the team's coaching staff. For now, the urgency for negotiations with Matthews just isn't there.
Treliving has one year to negotiate a new deal with Matthews, or risk letting him walk to free agency where the market will be huge for a player of his calibre.
The Bump
There's no question Matthews will get a raise on his next contract regardless of which team he signs it with. That said, TSN's Mike Johnson recently said he believes Matthews isn't interested in signing an eight year deal with the Leafs, estimating it will be either a three or five year contract.
