Nylander might be tempted by the idea of signing a short-term contract, especially if it's in the range of $8M. Then, after this contract, he'll be able to ask for a raise, as the salary cap will be higher in a few seasons.

Auston Matthews is also reportedly seeking a four/five-year extension, using the same strategy.
