Maple Leafs Top Prospect Honors His Father In A Special Way
Anyone who has played hockey knows that family and parents are an important part of a player's development and support system. One Maple Leafs prospect has decided to honor the impact his father had on him in a special way.
Maple Leafs Prospect Looking To Forge His Own Path
Roni Hirvonen and his father have always been close. This was particularly true during Hirvonen's hockey career. His father Timo was also a professional hockey player in Finland. Roni wore 33 growing up just like his father.
As Roni continued on his journey he switched to 22 to forge his own path. Unfortunately earlier this year Timo was diagnosed with brain cancer. He went in for surgery to improve his prognosis but sadly passed away due to complications.
Hirvonen Honors His Father With Big Change
After his father's passing Roni decided to make a change to honor his father. Roni will be switching from number 22 back to his father's number 33. Hirvonen had also worn 20 with the Maple Leafs during some of his development camp stints. Hirvonen took some profound wisdom from his father's passing.
Hirvonen is excited and hopeful for his future as a hockey player. He currently living with fellow Finn and Maple Leafs prospect Topi Niemela ahead of the upcoming season. As Hirvonen continues his journey toward the NHL he will do so in memory of his father.
