According to a recent report by trusted reported Andy Strickland, Brad Treiliving is the frontrunner for the Leafs' vacant GM position. Treliving is currently on an expiring deal with the Flames, and they've made it known he won't be returning. Treliving fits Shanahan's requirement of having prior GM experience and would bring a fresh new perspective to the Leafs' front office.
With a few teams currently in the market for a new general manager, it would be smart of Toronto to act quickly before another team scoops up their first choice. Treliving is sure to have plenty of interest, so Shanahan and MLSE should act quickly.
Brad Treliving isn't afraid to trade his superstars, as he pulled off one of the biggest trades in NHL history last season when he traded Matthew Tkachuk to the Florida Panthers for Jonathan Huberdeau, Mackenzie Weegar, and future assets. This kind of willingness to trade away star players might be what Toronto needs if they decide to move on from the "Core Four" strategy.
Nothing is confirmed yet, but look out for Treliving's name to be in the news in the coming days and weeks.
