After having acquired Murray from the Ottawa Senators, as well as his ~$4.7M cap-hit (Senators retained part of his full $6.25M salary), former Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas hoped the once star would solve their issues.
Unfortunately, the tandem he formed with Ilya Samsonov has now fallen apart, with Samsonov having been waived and sent to the Marlies, and Murray being on LTIR seemingly for the long haul. Brad Treliving shook things up today, however, by giving a promising update on Murray's health.
The Maple Leafs' cap situation most likely wouldn't allow him to be activated during the season, but if he magically is healthy on game 1 of the playoffs, he is a dark horse option. He has loads of playoff experience, and could be a better option that Ilya Samsonov or Martin Jones. Hopefully Joseph Woll's return in February will make Murray needless, but a little bit of insurance is never a bad thing.
